DT Serum, Primary Testing In Progress

"What are you telling me for?  Why not him?" Lex demanded, nodding to True. 
True was awake, but he had his eyes closed, one hand on Treble.

"I was saying it to both of you." Kat said in a shaky voice as she wiped her eyes again. "True, I don't want you to be in pain. If I could, I'd make sure you'd never feel it again and that you'd always have a reason to smile. I just.... I love you, and want you to be happy."

True opened his eyes, looking at her then turning away.  The pain made him less reasonable than usual.  "You left," he said bitterly.  "You don't care."

"I did," Kat admitted, "But I also came back. Doesn't that account for anything?" It killed her and crushed her to hear True say she didn't care for him, when that was about as far from the truth as possible.

"You'll-"  His breath caught painfully.  "You'll just-just leave again.  Leave again.  And again.  Never not l-leav-leaving."

Kat wept again. "That's not true!" She cried. "That's not true...." She sobbed quieter.

"you already left once.  What's-what's to say you're not lea-leaving again?" True groaned out, lost in a haze of pain.

"Because there is nothing for me if I leave." Kat sobbed. "I love you, True, and I already know that if I try to leave, I will never forgive myself." True was breaking the poor girls heart.

Lex stood and headed toward the door.  "I'll let you two have a minute."  He walked out, leaving True to Kat.
True was shivering, his eyes glazed in pain.

"True, please..." Kat begged. "I love you, and I don't want to see you like this. Not in this much pain. That's why I walked out. I couldn't stand the thought of you being in so much pain-" Her voice cracked and she sobbed into the comforter beside True. She felt utterly broken and helpless.

True finally looked at her.  "You mean it?" he whispered hoarsely.

Kat didn't pick up her head as she nodded into the comforter. Her throat was too closed up for words, and she felt like almost all her energy was drained from her body.

True couldn't speak.  One hand crawled over the comforter and touched her head, tangling in her hair.  "I'm sorry."

Kat cried a while longer before her sobs finally settled into hiccups. At that point, she finally lifted her head to look at True. Her eyes and face were puffy and red. She looked at him a moment before she had to look down again. Kat knew now that she couldn't make True take the pain pills, no matter how much she wished he did.

"Why does it matter to you so much?" True rasped.  "That I take the pills."

"Because you're hurting so much." Kat croaked. Her voice was shot from the crying. "They will help ease the pain, or at least take the edge off. Just one or two, please?" She begged.

True didn't say anything at first before finally nodding.  "One.  I'll take one."

Kat nodded. She got him one pill and a glass of water to chase it down with.

True stared at the pill.  For Kat.  He could for Kat.  He popped the pill into his mouth and swallowed.

Kat offered him the water mutely.

True drained the glass then set it aside.  "I'm sorry.  Hold me?  Please?  let me hold you?"

Kat nodded a little. She crawled gingerly on the bed beside him and hugged him. She was careful to not disturb the surgery area.

True hold her as well as he could, drawing comfort from her presence.  Turning his head, he buried his nose in her hair.

Kat laid her head on True's shoulder. She too was comforted by being near True. After a while, the exhausted girl started to nod off.

True closed his eyes, the pain slowly easing.  Finally, he dropped off to sleep.

Lex heard the knock on the door and went to answer it.  He opened the door then leaned back.  "Doc!  Your girlfriend is here!"
